Transportation engineering

Analysing and improving traffic: measurements, simulation and signal timing for smoother, more efficient movement on the road network.

Traffic engineering studies the flow of vehicles and pedestrians and proposes ways to reduce congestion, delay and environmental impact. The laboratory combines field measurements with simulation models.

Studies range from single junctions and road corridors to whole urban networks and motorways.

Indicative activities

  • Measurement and analysis of vehicle dynamics on motorways using accelerometers and GPS.
  • Small, medium and large-scale traffic simulation.
  • Planning of urban transport systems and traffic signalling.
  • Speed limit studies on motorways such as Corinth–Patras and Corinth–Tripoli.
